About Dr. Rowson:

Dr. Angela Rowson received both her B.S in Animal Science (1998) and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (2002) degrees from Iowa State University. She practiced in the Central Valley of California, Florida, and Iowa before transitioning to a career in industry where she consults with veterinarians, nutritionists, and dairy producers to help improve cow and calf health and productivity through the prevention of disease. Dr. Rowson is a Senior Technical Services Veterinarian with Vaxxinova and a Diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners where she is board-certified in Dairy Practice.

Learning objectives:

Autogenous vaccines are custom-made vaccines developed from pathogens isolated directly from a specific herd and are used when commercial vaccines are unavailable or ineffective. They are most often considered for recurring or herd-specific disease problems confirmed through diagnostic testing and veterinary consultation. The process involves identifying the disease, collecting samples, laboratory isolation of the pathogen, vaccine formulation by a licensed laboratory, and regulated approval for use. When properly administered under veterinary guidance, autogenous vaccines can help reduce disease as part of a comprehensive herd health program, alongside good management, biosecurity, and existing vaccination strategies. This presentation will review what autogenous vaccines are, when you should consider using them, the process involved in creating them, benefits and limitations, and farm specific examples.
