Small Animal Speaker:

We are very pleased to offer Lisa M. Freeman, DVM, PhD, DACVN Tufts Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine to lecture on Small Animal Nutrition

Topics tentatively will include:

1. Answering common owner questions about pet food. Nutrition is the most common area which owners have questions and veterinarians often feel unprepared to answer them. This talk will address some of the most common questions and myths that owners ask.

2. Dietary supplements: Helpful or harmful? Discussion of the pros and cons of using dietary supplements in pets. Which ones have the greatest potential benefits and which ones can be harmful.

3. Incorporating enteral nutrition into practice. Feeding tubes are a critical part of optimal management for patients with a variety of diseases. More easily placed feeding tubes are now available as well as diets with properties that may help to improve the outcome of animals with both acute and chronic diseases. A case based d iscussion will help to illustrate appropriate selection of patients, tubes, and diets that can be readily utilized in practice.

4. Talking to owners about unconventional diets . The use of homemade, vegetarian, and raw meat diets is becoming more and more common and questions from owners about these dietary options can be difficult for veterinarians to objectively answer. This talk will provide information on diets available and the pros and cons of feeding them to dogs and cats, as well as practical information on talking to owners about these issues.
