Poor Hair Coat
I have been feeding my 16 year old gelding the same kind of feed for the last three years. This year his hair coat looks poor and he is not getting as fat as he has been in previous seasons. What do I do for him?
You raise a good question about your gelding - which is a castrated horse. I am glad to see that you have such care and affection for your horse.
If there have been no changes in his lifestyle in recent years, then his feeding may be the root of the problem. His ability to utilize what you are feeding him may have been compromised. A thorough physical examination by your veterinarian would be the first step that may reveal some type of problem.
If his feeding is normal, close attention should be paid to his parasite control and his teeth. These could be indicators of problems as well. Some blood work, ordered by your veterinarian, would be useful to evaluate some of his internal functions.
Good luck with your gelding!
