Weight Loss in Older Cat
My 13 year old cat is really thin. She has lost a lot of weight in the last few months. Is this just a part of getting old? Is she going to die soon? Is there anything I can do?
Although your cat is considered to be geriatric, she still can have a comfortable future if you address her weight loss. Please take your pet to a veterinarian. Semi-annual examinations are advised for cats over 10 years of age. Your veterinarian will probably recommend blood work to identify diseases that can cause weight loss. Do not feed your pet for 10-12 hours prior to the examination so a blood panel may be done if indicated. Allow her to have all the water she wants. Hyperthyroidism, dental disease, reduced kidney function, intestinal worms, heartworms, diabetes, liver disease or inappropriate food for her age can all cause weight loss and may be treated successfully in many cases.
Good luck with your cat!
