Animal Shelter Resources
- VVMA Animal Welfare Committee's Best Practices. Click here for document. Included in this document: Medical flow chart for cats and dogs entering animal shelters, adoption criteria oints, dog intake profile, manual for behavioral evaluation.
- UC Davis Koret Shelter Medicine Program: http://sheltermedicine.com/portal/portal.shtml#top3
This site has information sheets and links for many common and uncommon shelter diseases and conditions, including zoonoses and management issues. It's an excellent reference for treatment, prevention, client education, staff education, etc.
- Association of Shelter Veterinarians: http://www.sheltervet.org/
This group has a $25 annual membership fee, which gives the member access to an excellent listserv as well as list archives and uploaded documents and forms. This is a great way to connect and share information with vets who work with shelters in other places, as well
as professors of shelter medicine and epidemiology. Many members are full time shelter vets, and many others are private practitioners who do small amounts of shelter work.
- Textbook:
Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff, edited by Lila Miller and Stephen Zawistowski, Blackwell publishing, 2004.
This book is a comprehensive reference for shelter medicine and is valuable for those who have a strong interest in the field--and also may be a good reference to recommend to shelter staff.
- Vaccination Guidelines:
