Penny

Our next award recipient is Penny, owned by Thomas Lawyer of Huntington, VT. Penny was nominated by VVMA member veterinarian Dr. Al Moraska.

We feel that Penny is a very special inductee. You see, Penny is a gerbil; one of the species that veterinarians call pocket pets, and a species that many people probably feel could never be a wonderful friend. Well, she may be very small in size but she is very big at heart and has made a wonderful companion to Tom. We feel the letters supporting Penny’s nomination for the VVMA’s Animal Hall of Fame say it all.

“Hi, my name is Tom and I want to nominate my pet gerbil.

Penny is a white gerbil with gray on her. Penny is very calming. Even when I’m mad, she makes me feel better. She’s always ready to play with me. We especially like to play Crocodile Hunter. She drives the truck. She likes to play hide-n-go-seek in a box with paper in it. I think she is the best companion.”

From Tiara:
“Penny is fun to play with. She is soft and furry. Her claws scratch. She makes happy.”

From Mom:
“Penny has taught Tom to be responsible for a pet. He turns into a different person when he is playing with her. She changes his attitude and puts a smile on his face.”

Tom has brought Penny, Crocodile Hunter, here today for us all to meet. We are pleased that several of Tom’s teachers from the Camels Hump Middle School could also attend.

The Vermont Veterinary Medical Association is happy to induct Penny into the Vermont Animal Hall of Fame in the Pocket Pet Companion Animal Category.
