Bear

Our first inductee into the Vermont Animal Hall of Fame in the Therapy Animal Category is Bear, a 6 year old, German Shepherd Dog, owned by Dot Maver and handled by Ryan Knapp, who happens to be the youngest therapy dog handler in the United States! Ryan is 13 years old and has been working with Bear for 3 years. Bear was nominated by VVMA member veterinarian Dr. Karen Bradley.

As a therapy dog, Bear regularly visits Mayo Nursing Home and Assisted Living, Northfield Elementary School, Braintree Elementary School as well as others. Bear is well trained, knows commands well and never jumps on people. He is very gentle and loving. There is nothing Bear likes more than a bunch of children and every child loves Bear! Maybe we should let some of the many letters we received in support of Bear's nomination tell the story:

Dear Vermont Canine Hall of Fame,
Bear is a very nice dog. He worries about people when they are hurt.
Bear's friend, Carl

Dear Canine Hall of Fame,
I think Bear should be selected for this honor because Bear has never been mean to me. He is very nice to everyone and only chases flys.
Bear's friend, Alex

The VVMA would like to induct Bear into the first Vermont Animal Hall of Fame in the Therapy Animal Category.
